The Spokesperson of the European Union (EU) External Action Service has released a statement today denouncing the so-called presidential elections and the referendum on amending the name of the Georgian breakaway Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia).

"The European Union does not recognise the framework in which the so-called Presidential elections and the referendum on amending the name of the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia are due to take place on 9 April,” said Maja Kocijanicic.
"The European Union reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Georgia, including through its co-chairmanship of the Geneva International Discussions and the EU Monitoring Mission”, she added.

The statement also highlighted the EU’s firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

Earlier a statement by the US State Department also condemned the upcoming illegal elections in the occupied region.

Tomorrow a so called "presidential election” and "referendum” on a name change is planned to be held in breakaway Tskhinvali region. Tbilisi says these events are illegitimate and will have no legal force.
