Avalanche threat shuts down Georgian road-link with Russia

The Gudauri-Kobi section of eastern Georgia’s Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi route is closed to all vehicles due to an avalanche threat, Georgia’s Road Department announced today.
The Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi road is the only route linking Georgia with Russia.
Vehicles travelling along the 134-135 section of the same road have been warned not to stop moving due to poor road conditions, officials said.
They added that patrol police are controlling traffic along this section.
"Movement will be restored along the Gudauri-Kobi section as soon as the avalanche threat is contained”, officials said.
Winter is in full force in Georgia. Heavy snowfall and unusually strong frosts put restrictions on almost all central and regional roads across the country.
Heavy snowfall across Georgia since January 27 has led to travel restrictions being placed on certain roads.
Heavy snowfall has hit the western part of Georgia, which means restrictions are imposed on some of the roads, says the Road Department if Georgia.
IRD Engineering, a leading Italian engineering consultancy, will supervise construction work on Georgia’s main East - West Highway (E-60).
A section of the international Senaki-Poti-Sarpi road, which links Georgia and Turkey, has been closed to all traffic due to bridge damage.
Extreme weather, wind and snowfall have caused problems on roads across Georgia.
