Italian company to supervise development of Georgia’s East-West Highway

IRD Engineering, a leading Italian engineering consultancy, will supervise construction work on Georgia’s main East - West Highway (E-60).

Today the Roads Department of Georgia and IRD Engineering signed an agreement in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

The Italian company will be responsible for supervising construction work along a 14km stretch on the Zemo Osiauri - Chumateleti section of E-60. Per the deal, IRD Engineering will receive $4.96 million for its services.

E-60 is Georgia’s main transport artery connecting Tbilisi with Georgia’s western sea towns of Batumi and Poti.

The East - West Highway is being upgraded section by section to ensure the road meets European standards.

The Zemo Osiauri - Chumateleti section of the highway will be repaved with a four - lane cement, concrete road, including 21 bridges, five tunnels, reinforced concrete underpasses and drainage systems.

The 14km Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti road leads to the Rikoti Pass tunnel. This will make it possible to bypass Khashuri, Surami, Chumateleti from the north and reach the Rikoti tunnel”, announced the Roads Department of Georgia.

The Zemo Osiauri - Chumateleti section will be constructed within the E-60 East - West Highway Improvement Project - a part of the Spatial Development Plan of Georgia and a government - initiated, four - point reform plan.

Construction of the highway started in 2012 and to date more than 90km have already been put into operation.
