Romania and Finland do not recognise the so-called 'parliamentary elections' held on March 12 by Russia-backed de-facto leadership controlling Georgia's Abkhazia region.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said yesterday that the Romanian Foreign Ministry denounced the results of an election conducted illegitimately on Georgian territory without the consent of the Government of Georgia.

Expressing their support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, the Romanian Foreign Ministry believes such illegitimate steps in Georgia’s breakaway territories endanger stability in the region.

Paivi Peltokoski, Director of Unit for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland also expressed her country’s support for Georgia.

The so-called parliamentary elections held in breakaway, Russian-backed Abkhazia last Sunday has also denounced by the United States Embassy in Georgia, the European Union, Poland, Estonia, Azerbaijan and NATO.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry believes this act is yet another attempt at legitimising the consequences of several waves of ethnic cleansing, military invasion, occupation and lasting aggression by Russia against Georgian statehood.

As of today, only four countries recognise Georgia’s breakaway regions as independent republics; these are Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru.
