The United States Embassy in Georgia announced today that "the US does not recognise the results of an election conducted illegitimately in Georgian territory without the consent of the Government of Georgia, and condemns the decision to integrate the military forces of the breakaway region of South Ossetia with those of the Russian Federation”.

The United States’ position on Abkhazia and South Ossetia is clear and consistent – both these regions are integral parts of Georgia”, the statement reads.

The US statement refers to the recent developments around Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) which are under Russian control.

This Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved of an agreement between Russia and de-facto authorities in Tskhinvali, allowing South Ossetian troops to serve in the Russian Armed Forces. Last year Russia’s parliament ratified an illegal military cooperation agreement with Abkhazia as well.

The so-called parliamentary elections held in breakaway, Russian-backed Abkhazia last Sunday has also denounced by the European Union, Poland, EstoniaAzerbaijan and NATO.

The US believes the Geneva International Discussions is the forum to address the situation in Georgia's Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions and they urge all participants to avoid actions which undermine these discussions.

Since the Russia-Georgia war of August 2008 the Geneva International Discussions have been the only format of dialogue between Georgia and Russia.

The embassy said the US fully supports the territorial integrity of Georgia and its sovereignty within its internationally recognised borders.
