Georgia fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Spain within its internationally recognised borders, says the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

"Georgia hopes that the situation in the Kingdom of Spain will be handled in a peaceful manner, with full protection of the country’s legislation and its constitution and in accordance with the principles of law,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry told local media.

The Spanish region of Catalonia held a referendum on independence this Sunday. The single question that faced voters was "Do you want Catalonia to become an independent state in the form of a republic?" Preliminary results show 90 percent in favour of independence.

Nearly 900 people were hurt as police violently tried to enforce a Spanish court order suspending the vote, which the government had declared illegal.

The leader of the autonomous region told the BBC today that Catalonia will declare independence from Spain in a matter of days. Meanwhile, Spain's King Felipe VI said the vote's organisers had put themselves "outside the law."
