EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee stresses Georgia’s progress

Co-chair of the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee, a body which provides scrutiny of the implementation of the Georgia-EU Association Agreement, states that MEPs in the European Parliament recognize Georgia’s progress to the EU.
One of the significant demonstrations of the progress is the Georgia-EU visa liberalization. There is a serious progress in the energy field as well,” Co-chair of the Committee Sajjad Karim stated after his meeting with Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze today in Kutaisi.
He stressed one of the key issues of the meeting was the ongoing constitutional reform.
We are closely observing the reform,” Karim said.
One of the issues the MEPs raised at the meeting with Georgian lawmakers was women’s more involvement in politics,” Majority MP Tamar Khulordava announced.
It is the fifth meeting of the committee and after the delegation composed of European parliamentarians hold all scheduled meetings in the legislative body they will voice their recommendations.
MEPs conclude their meetings tomorrow.
Today is one of the most important days for Georgia on its European Union (EU) integration path as the country’s Association Agreement (AA) with the EU is fully and officially coming into force.
Georgian citizens will be able to travel to any of the Schengen Zone countries visa-free in just 20 days. New legislation lifting visa-requirements for Georgians has been published in the European Union’s Official Journal today.
Last night the EU Foreign Affairs Council announced its decision to end the procedures needed for ratification of the EU-Georgia AA deal. The Council said the Agreement would come into force on the first day of July 2016.
Garibashvili described the signature of the Agreement as a "new great date in the chronicles of his homeland”.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili will participate in the European Union (EU) and Georgia Association Council meeting tomorrow which will be held in Brussels, Belgium. The progress achieved through the implementation of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and the Free and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) will be discussed at the meeting.
The Georgian government says that today’s Georgia-EU Association Council meeting highlighted the fact that "since the last meeting of the Georgia-EU Association Council Meeting Georgia has achieved enormous progress and vital outcomes”.
The European Union (EU) is considering the possibility of accrediting Georgian businesses. The decision came after a meeting between Georgia’s Prime Minister and European Commissioner for Trade which was held today at the European Commission, Brussels.
The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee adopted its new report on the implementation of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, saying that the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia in October will be ‘pivotal’ in confirming the country’s democratic credentials. The report was approved by 56 votes in favour, eight against with six abstentions.The report welcomed the ‘continuous deepening’ of EU-Georgia relations and acknowledges the ‘country's recent progress in implementing comprehensive overall reforms, which has made Georgia a key partner of the EU in the region.’
