Georgia is one of the top tourism destinations among Iranians, says the Iranian Vice-President and Head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organisation, Ali Asghar Mounesan.

Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met with Mounesan today in China, on the sideline of the 22nd General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The pair stressed the historic ties between Georgia and Iran, and discussed increasing bilateral relations in different fields.

The meeting focused on the trade and economic and tourism relations.

"The Iranian Vice President stressed Iran’s increasing interest towards Georgia’s tourism potential and highlighted that among Iranians, Georgia is one of the top tourism destinations”, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile in China, Janelidze is expected to speak at the UNWTO event that is running from September 11-16.

The event brought together up to 1,500 delegates from 150 countries across the world.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Janelidze also held a brief meeting with Chinese authorities. Highlighting the importance of developing people-to-people contacts and cooperation in tourism, the Chinese side thanked the Georgian delegation for participation in the General Assembly.

The 22nd General Assembly will approve the candidacy for the post of UNWTO Secretary-General for the period stretching from 2018-2021. The 105th session of the UNWTO Executive Council, meeting in Madrid, Spain, on 12 May 2017, recommended Zurab Pololikashvili, Ambassador of Georgia to Spain, as a nominee for the post of Secretary-General for the four-year-period starting January 2018.
