The former ruling United National Movement (UNM) party has united into an election bloc with two other opposition parties for the Municipal Elections, which will take place on October 21.

Together with the UNM, the bloc is made up of the Georgian Christian-Conservative Party, chaired by Shota Malashkhia, and the National-Democratic Party, headed by Bachuki Kardava.

Meanwhile another opposition party, European Georgia, also announced the creation of a bloc for this election.

European Georgia – made up by former UNM members – have united with a newly registered party – the Movement for Free Georgia. The party was registered on August 22 in the name of Khatuna Koiava.

Levan Tarkhnishvili, a member of the European Georgia, said that the bloc was created for "technical purposes” so that its members enjoy the privileges that the Georgian legislation gives to election blocs.

At these elections, people get to elect mayors of self-governing cities as well as members and chairs of local councils.
