Georgian Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze has presented a candidate to head the State Audit Office today.

Kobakhidze’s candidate for Auditor General is Irakli Mekvabishvili.

Since 2007, Mekvabishvili has been a Senior Banker at the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

"If Parliament gives me a vote of confidence as Auditor General, I will take care of further institutional development of the State Audit Office”, Mekvabishvili said.

He added he will make sure the Office becomes "more efficient, flexible, transparent and independent”.

"We all will unite around the values such as objectivity, independence, professionalism and openness”, he said.

It’s a prerogative of parliament speaker to nominate auditor general. A candidate is considered approved if he/she receives a majority of votes at parliament.

The Georgian Parliament will vote to approve Mekvabishvili as Auditor General on September 20. If approved, he will hold the post for the next five years.

The term of the previous Auditor General, Lasha Tordia, expired this July.
