The Parliament of Georgia has elected a new Auditor General to head the State Audit Office today.
Thanks to the votes of 80 deputies, Irakli Mekvabishvili was elected as the new Auditor General for a five-year term.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze presented Mekvabishvili’s candidacy to head the State Audit Office last month. At that time Mekvabishvili promised he would make sure the Office becomes "more efficient, flexible, transparent and independent”.
Since 2007, Mekvabishvili has been a Senior Banker at the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The term of the previous Auditor General, Lasha Tordia, expired this July.
