Russian-controlled border guards have illegally detained yet another Georgian citizen at the occupation line.

The incident took place today in the village of Rike in the Samegrelo region that borders the Russian-occupied region of Georgia – Abkhazia.

Reports said that the detained man is a local of the village. He was accused of crossing the so-called border, which is an administrative boundary line separating the occupied region from the rest of Georgia.

The Georgian State Security Service said that the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia has already been notified about the fact and communication is underway to free the man.

The illegal detention of Georgian citizens by Russian-controlled guards is a common issue in both Russian-occupied region of Georgia – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia). The detainees are usually freed only after their families pay a ransom.

The most recent case of the illegal detention at the occupation line was reported yesterday.
