Five medals for Georgian team at European Wrestling Championships

Georgian wrestlers brought home five medals, including gold for Giorgi Tcholadze and Giorgi Gegelashvili, from the Cadet European Championships hosted in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital Sarajevo.

The two champions of Georgia’s freestyle team claimed the ultimate prizes in 42kg and 46kg category respectively.

Tcholadze defeated Azerbaijan’s Tofig Aliyev with a score 8-2, while Gegelashvili outplayed his Russian counterpart Magomed Abdurakhmanov in a closer fixture that ended 5-2.

[With the score at 2-2 and with] just over 30 seconds left in the match, Gegelashvili attacked and a flurry ensued, which resulted in the Georgian scoring a takedown.”
The call was challenged and upheld, giving Gegelashvili a three-point victory”, said a report by United World Wrestling Press.

Beyond the two gold-winners, three Georgian athletes claimed one silver and two bronze medals at the event.

In the 54kg final, Vladimer Gamkrelidze finished second Andrii Dzhelep of Ukraine, while Tornike Katamadze was third in the 58kg category.

Finally Davit Kochkiani handily defeated France’s Pierre Mornat with a score 10-0 to also end up third in the 85kg.

The Cadet European Championships will run in Sarajevo through July 30.
