The summer season has kicked off in central Georgia's mountainous Bakuriani resort, transforming the winter wonderland into a hot summer destination.

Bakuriani officially opened for the 2017 summer season on July 2. Instead of skiing, snowboarding or sledding, visitors can still enjoy the mountainous atmosphere and try their hand at mountain biking, hiking and camping.

Hosted by the Mountain Resorts Development Company, children and media representatives were invited to join in the opening ceremony.

Director of the Mountain Resorts of Georgia Aleksandre Onoprishvili announced up-coming developments and fresh attractions that will be added to Bakuriani this year.

In about one month, construction of a biathlon infrastructure will start in Bakuriani, which is the largest project that has ever been implemented in Bakuriani. The biathlon track includes 11 km asphalt road, park, and a recreation zone where everyone will be able to enjoy sporting activities,” said Onoprishvili.

A new skating rink and trampoline zone are also in the pipes.

Furthermore, Bakuriani might host the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships. Representatives from International Ski Federation have already visited Bakuriani and Gudauri ski resorts to learn about the potential of these sites.

Developing Georgia’s mountains regions into into four-season resorts is one focus of the Georgian Government.

Bakuriani already enjoys such infrastructure that is necessary for a four-season mountain resort.

Last year a track for mountain sleds – also known as toboggan – was unveiled on the Didveli slope, a popular skiing destination.

The Didveli sled track itself was installed by Slovakian company Tatralift along a 1,360m-long lane.
