Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Andriy Parubiy visits a family living behind a barbed wire fence near the Russian-occupied area of Georgia – Tskhinvali region (also known as South Ossetia).

The occupation line isolates the house of Davit Vanishvili and his family from the rest of the village of Khurvaleti, preventing them from freely moving along the village and sometimes even from buying food.

Meeting Vanishvili, Parubiy learned more about the serious humanitarian situation that the family is facing behind the barbed wire fence.

"I hope that both in Georgia and Ukraine, illegal actions and occupation by Russia will end soon”, he said.

The Vanishvili family lives behind the barbed-wire fence for years now. Following the August 2008 war Russia set up a new Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) between Georgia and Tskhinvali region, erected a barbed wire fence spanning 50km along this arbitrary line through Georgian villages and announced it is the new "state border.”

Any attempt Georgian villagers make to cross the new "state border” is treated as a violation and the so-called offenders are arrested and taken to Tskhinvali prison.

Parubiy’s visit is the first visit of chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament to Georgia in the last 10 years.

While in Tbilisi Parubiy already met with Georgian leaders and is set to leave the country later today.
