Georgia, Ukraine discuss deepening bilateral cooperation

Georgian Parliamentary Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze met with Andriy Parubiy the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi today.

Having visited the country under the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s spring session, Parubiy said he was glad to congratulate Georgian people with the 26th anniversary of restoration of independence from the Soviet Union under the NATO PA session held in Tbilisi.

It is important to intensify relations between our countries and I believe that the parliamentary format is the dimension allowing us to make rapid steps”, Parubiy said.

He said Georgia and Ukraine have immense potential of cooperation in various spheres including security, infrastructure and transport.

Parubiy further spoke about establishment of Georgia-Ukraine-Moldova Parliamentary Assembly and noted that this format will facilitate to further intensification of cooperation.

Georgia-Ukraine-Moldova Parliamentary Assembly may complete cooperation in Baltic and Black Sea regions, which is important for cooperation in transport and economic spheres, as well as in infrastructural direction”, he said.

Ukrainian President and Prime Minister plan to visit Georgia this year.

Kobakhidze said against the background of Russian aggression to Georgia and Ukraine, "it once again became clear that our people shall stand united to deal with foreign threats and mobilise international support”.

Welcoming European aspirations of the two countries Kvirikashvili congratulated Ukrainian citizens with their recent visa-free travel to the European Union/Schengen Area that came soon after Georgia’s visa liberalisation and also welcomed increasing interest of Ukrainian tourists to Georgia.

Meeting with Parubiy on the same day, Georgian President Margvelashvili praised long record of friendship between Georgia and Ukraine - the two countries sharing the same challenges and threats. 

President Margvelashvili said that the issues of the Russian occupied regions of Georgia and Ukraine should always be on international agenda.
