Vice President of the Parliament of Europe believes Georgia should be offered a visa-free regime with the European Union (EU) as it would encourage Georgian citizens to support democratic reforms in their homeland.

Vice President of European Parliament Ioan Mircea said Georgia enjoyed his unanimous support as it moved along its path towards Europe.

After meeting Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikheil Janelidze in Strasbourg, France yesterday, the EP official said he hoped Georgia would be granted visa-free travel to the Schengen zone "very soon”.

We have discussed Georgia’s relations with the Parliament of Europe, the meaning of reforms being carried out in Georgia and the public support in this regard,” he said.
Public support is essential in the process of carrying out democratic reforms [and] I believe visa liberalisation with the European Union will boost Georgian’s support for these reforms,” Mircea said.

Mircea said his Social-Democrats group in the Parliament of Europe also unanimously supported Georgia’s fast integration into Europe.
