Triumphant: Georgian wrestlers dominate international competition

Young Georgian wrestlers have dominated an international competition in Austria after winning medals in all categories of the tournament.

The Austrian city of Gotzis hosted the Sixth Austrian Open 2016 event of Greco-Roman wrestling, organised by the United World Wrestling (UWW) on February 26 and 27.

The competition had eight weight categories; Georgian wrestlers won six and gained medals in the other two categories.

Fourteen countries presented the best of their young athletes at the competition.

The award-winning Georgians were:

  • Nugzar Tsurtsumia (50kg) – gold;
  • Giorgi Kurtanidze (66kg) – gold;
  • Temur Chkuaseli (74km) – gold;
  • Guram Khetsuriani (84kg) – gold;
  • Giorgi Melia (96) – gold;
  • Zviad Pataridze (120kg) – gold;
  • Levan Kavzharadze (60kg) – silver;
  • Davit Chkhartishvili (55kg) – bronze.

With this result Georgia was named the overall winner nation of the tournament.

The country led the list of winners with 77 points, followed by Hungary with 53 points and the United States with 46 points.
