Georgia's Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili is welcoming the International Criminal Court (ICC)’s decision to authorise an investigation into possible war crimes committed during a conflict between Russia and Georgia in 2008.

Last night the PM said the investigation would be an "opportunity” for Georgia to present already gathered materials about the effects of the war before the international court.

I believe it is very good that this process has been launched. This will be a chance for us to present all the materials we had compiled through various local investigations before the International Criminal Court and, of course, to protect Georgia’s interests,” Kvirikashvili said.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will investigate possible war crimes committed during the Russia-Georgia war of 2008.

Earlier yesterday Georgia’s Justice Minister said she welcomed the investigation and noted the ICC decision document’s legal formulations were "in line with Georgian national and state interests”.

On January 27 the Pre-Trial Chamber I of the ICC authorised prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to proceed with an investigation into the crimes, allegedly committed in and around South Ossetia, Georgia, between July 1 and October 10, 2008.

The Chamber made this decision after examining the prosecutor’s request and supporting material, including representations by or on behalf of 6,335 victims of the conflict.
