Georgia is embracing new technologies and embarking on a major project to map every single road in the country, making it easier and safer to travel around Georgia.

Work has already begun to sufficiently map all streets, buildings, service providing spots and other popular tourist locations in Georgia. For each location, coordinates will be marked, meaning people can search for these sites using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.

GPS provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on Earth where there is an obstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.

In Georgia sites will be mapped in a database in the Cloud that can be accessed by any connectable, mobile device.

Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced the Government had already started working on this project.

He said this was part of the Spatial Arrangement Plan that woul modernise infrastructural development in Georgia and transform the country into a modern, 21st Century prosperous place.

Georgia really is one big museum which is unique in the world and we must pay attention to our monuments,” Kvirikashvili said.
We should build proper infrastructure to make each monument important and interesting for foreign tourists.”

The high official said the new Cloud project would make it possible for visitors to search for, and find directions to any major landmark in Georgia. The database would show "any turn, any major road or small road” in detail.

He added a tourist would be able to use GPS navigation on their mobile device to direct them to their destination, whether it’s a hotel, restaurant, petrol station or parking area.

Several small companies had attempted to create this type of database before but the work was immense and never finished.

That’s why we believe it’s very important for the Government to get involved in this project – because we will make it happen. And once the project is implemented, Georgia will become an entirely different tourist destination,” said the PM.
