Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili stars in New York classical concert

Famous New York performance venue Carnegie Hall is gearing up to host acclaimed Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili next weekend for an evening of classical music.

The famed American theatre will host Buniatishvili on January 30 as she makes her debut performance with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Buniatishvili will play Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 with the orchestra after the latter’s opening performance of Haydn's Symphony No. 1.

New York classical music commentary website Classicalite announced Buniatishvili's upcoming Carnegie Hall evening on its Twitter account:

The classical evening will also include works by late Russian composer Anton Arensky and legendary pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Buniatishvili, an award-winning Georgian pianist, will perform the evening's repertoire on the Carnegie Hall Stern Auditorium's Perelman Stage, which has an audience of 2,800.

Over the years the stage featured some of the most historical events including the 1965 performance by pianist Vladimir Horowitz and the 1972 appearance of American comedian Groucho Marx.

Buniatishvili was currently on her United States tour, which was scheduled to end after a final performance at the Performing Arts Centre at Purchase College in New York on January 31.

The Batumi-born pianist was praised as "one of today’s most technically gifted young pianists" by the classical music review website Gramophone and lauded for her "ferocious intensity, vivid imagery, and sheer excitement" by San Francisco Classical Voice.

Buniatishvili was awarded third prize at the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition and second prize at the 2005 Tbilisi International Piano competition.
