"These Parliamentary Elections will be a test of our democracy and we are all dedicated to ensuring these elections are held in a way that meets the highest standards,” says Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvrikashvili.

The head of the Georgian Government said legislation had been improved, which included tightening the sentences for people who commit physical abuse during the election.

These actions aim to avoid situations like what we saw recently at a polling station [at the municipal elections]. This was an absolutely deplorable and regretful fact and we reacted promptly to it. [The legislation changes] will also play a role in preventing such cases in future elections,” said Kvirikashvili during the Ambassadorial 2016 event several days ago.

The PM was referring to a fight involving dozens of people that erupted between supporters of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia (GDDG) party and opposition United National Movement (UNM) outside a polling station in Kortskheli village, Zugdidi municipality, during the by-elections for Sakrebulo (local council) on May 22.

Meanwhile at the Ambassadorial event PM Kvirikashvili also spoke about , the Government’s four-point reform plan, which includes new tax benefits, infrastructure plans, governance reforms and an overhaul of the education system.

He noted the role of Georgia’s Ambassadors in implementing all these reforms was very important and their involvement in these processes was essential.
