EBRD marks 25 years, offers €400m investment to Georgia

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) says this year will be a "year of historic investment” in Georgia and it will continue its drive to reenergise the economy with investments and policy dialogue.

Today the EBRD celebrated its 25th anniversary of working in Georgia with a special ceremony in capital Tbilisi.

Bruno Balvanera, the EBRD’s Regional Director for Caucasus, Moldova and Belarus, addressed guests and said this year would be a "year of historic investment” before announcing the Bank would invest hundreds of millions of Euro in Georgia.

We plan to invest more than €400 million in Georgia and it will be an unprecedented amount of money,” said Balvanera. This money would go to various sectors of the economy, he said.

The EBRD official reconfirmed the Bank’s on-going commitment to Georgia, support for the development of Georgia’s economy and the private sector.

We consider Georgia as the best country in terms of reforms, as well as introduction of international standards and accepting EBRD mandate. Thus, Georgia has the best investment environment and a great future,” he said.
We look to the future in a very positive way, and this is exactly why we want to celebrate the success of EBRD and Georgia,” Balvanera added.

At the 25th anniversary celebration senior bankers, Government officials and the media heard Balvanera speak about the major achievements the EBRD had made in Georgia over the past two decades.

He also spoke about EBRD’s successful cooperation and fluid policy dialogue with the Government of Georgia, namely the Ministry of Finance.

Currently the EBRD’s portfolio of projects in Georgia amounted to €610 million, while the bank invested €2.6 billion in 190 projects in the past 25 years.
