Parking on narrow sidewalks could soon be banned in Georgia’s capital after Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania ordered experts to solve the city's parking problems.

Narmania said recently citizens of Tbilisi frequently notified City Hall about cars parking illegally on footpaths, thus making it difficult for pedestrians to walk freely and safely along the sidewalks.

In addition, he said the previous government had given permission for authorised people to park on more than 2,000 of Tbilisi's sidewalks.

"There are many places with narrow footpaths where parking of cars has created additional discomfort for pedestrians. I want to order relevant services to timely resolve this issue," Narmania said.

"First of all you should present information where the streets are narrow, after which I will accept suggestions on how to limit parking on sidewalks and how to give pedestrians more space for free movement,” the Tbilisi Mayor noted.

Recently Narmania announced the construction of a multi-level parking system, which would help ease traffic woes, as well as the issue of parking on the sidewalks.

The parking problem became a major issue in Tbilisi that worried pedestrians have also launched an online campaign  to stop the frequent parking faux pas.
