Complete information detailing five of Georgia’s main cities will soon be published on Google Maps.
Currently only a small portion of capital city Tbilisi is detailed on the online mapping service but this year the entire city along with Gori, Rustavi, Mtskheta and Poti will feature on the site.
Google Maps is part of the world’s largest search engine. It is an online mapping service that offers satellite imagery, street maps and street view perspectives of the city.
Google noted eight districts of Tbilisi had been already added to the online mapping service but the whole city, together with four other Georgian cities, was expected to be added to the service this year.
Currently Google Maps was updating its Georgia content and adding detailed information about Gldani-Nadzaladevi district to the service.
The process of adding Georgia’s five cities to Google Maps was initiated and organised by Georgia’s National Agency of Public Registry.
Once updated, Google Maps will show a variety of detailed information about the Georgian cities, including buildings, roads, addresses, information about streets, highways, railways, mountains, rivers and more.
The National Agency of Public Registry has been collecting geographical and spatial data for the past four years, with the goal of obtaining enough information for Georgia to be searched on Google Maps, and for the results to be adequate.
The Agency believed having more detailed information about Georgia on Google Maps would help tourists to better navigate around the city as well as offer more support to local residents.
Negotiations between the National Agency of Public Registry and Google started in 2011 and lasted for two years before the Agency became a regional administrator of Google Maps.
