Georgian theatre in numbers: 2014 statistics

More than 400,000 people visited Georgia’s 52 theatres in 2014, latest statistics reveal.

Tbilisi-based Ilia State University’s Modern Georgian Theatre Research Centre summed up the 2014 year and named the most successful Georgian performances, directors, actors and actresses.

While there are 52 registered theatres in the country, the statistics only covered 48 theatres; of which 30 are ere public theatres and 18 are private theatres.

Last year the 48 theatres staged 3,660 performances, which were attended by 423,048 viewers.

Meanwhile, 25 Georgian theatres took their performances beyond the country's borders and staged 161 plays in 22 foreign countries.

The Theatre Research Centre named Soso Nemsadze, Irakli Gogia and Dimitri Khvtisiashvili as the most productive theatre directors, as they staged the largest number of performances in 2014.

However, the best directors 2014 were:

  • Levan Tsuladze – for Amorous Letters at the Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre
  • David Doiashvili – for The Lower Depth at the Vaso Abashidze Tbilisi State Music and Drama Theatre
  • Data Tavadze – for Pain Is Youth at the Royal District Theatre
  • Gabriel Goshadze – for Antigone at the Iliauni Theatre
  • Ioane Khutsishvili – for Macbeth at the Lado Meskhishvili Kutaisi State Drama Theatre

The best actresses were:

  • Zaza Lebanidze of Shota Rustaveli State Drama Theatre
  • Manana Kakhiani of Shota Rustaveli State Drama Theatre
  • Tekla Javakhadze of Tbilisi State Youth Theatre
  • Kato Kalatozishvili of Royal District Theatre
  • Nino Tcholadze of Lado Muskhelishvili Kutaisi State Drama Theatre

The best actors were:

  • Misha Gomiashvili of the Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre
  • Gia Abesalashvili of the Mikheil Tumanishvili Film Actors’ Theatre
  • Tornike Gogritchiani of the Royal District Theatre
  • Gia Roinishvili of the Iliauni Theatre
  • Bacho Chachibaia of the Lado Muskhelishvili Kutaisi State Drama Theatre
