NATO Deputy Secretary General begins Georgia visit

NATO Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow has begun his two-day visit to Georgia today.

Ambassador Vershbow has already met with Georgia's Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili and State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration David Bakradze.

At the meetings, the sides discussed Georgia's implementation of the NATO substantial package and engagement of NATO in this process.

In addition, the Georgian high officials and the NATO envoy touched on other topics including regional security, the situation in Georgia’s breakaway regions and Russia’s policy towards them.

Vershbow once again expressed NATO's full support towards the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as well as towards the country's efforts for becoming a member of the Alliance.

Later today Vershbow is scheduled to meet Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, after which they will hold a joint press conference for media.

In addition, the NATO official will meet Georgia's first Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Dondua, Defence Minister Mindia Janelidze and the Patriarch of Georgia His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II.

Vershbow will also attend a panel discussion of the Atlantic Council of Georgia where he will deliver a keynote speech.

Tomorrow, the NATO official will meet President Giorgi Margvelashvili and hold a press conference with him in the Presidential Palace.
