The global community is concerned by Russia’s creeping occupation into Georgian soil and is urging the giant nation to respect Georgia’s territorial integrity.

Russia’s recent illegal actions at the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) between occupied Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) and the rest of Georgia was the subject of a daily briefing in the United States (US) yesterday led by US State Department spokesperson John Kirby.

"Our position on South Ossetia and Abkhazia [Georgia’s other Russian-occupied region] remain clear: These regions are integral parts of Georgia,” Kirby said at yesterday’s briefing.

"We reaffirm our strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence.
"We once again urge Russia to fulfill all of its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement to withdraw its forces to pre-conflict positions, to reverse its recognition of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states and to provide free access for humanitarian assistance to these regions.”

Two days ago Russia’s occupational forces illegally placed so-called border signs near Georgia’s central highway in several villages in Gori municipality in central Georgia. This action, referred to as Russia’s creeping occupation, saw about two more kilometres of Georgian soil in the heart of the country now occupied by Russia.

Russia had already unlawfully taken over about 20 percent of Georgian territory.

Ukraine also condemned Russia’s illegal actions in a special statement published on the Foreign Ministry’s website.

"[Russia’s recent activities at the ABL] are further proof of the creeping aggression of Russia in the region,” said the Ukrainian statement.

"Violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, the annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the ongoing aggression in eastern Ukraine [is] destroying the modern system of global security.

"Ukraine condemns such actions and expressed its strong support of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders and calls on the international community to consolidate to counter the annexation of Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia (Georgia).”
