Lithuania has joined the global campaign to support and stand by Tbilisi flood victims by hosting a charity concert.
Musicians and artists took to the stage in Siauliai city last night, which was dedicated to Georgia and supporting those who had suffered in Saturday night’s disaster, Lithuanian news agency Etaplius.it announced.
About 20 people died in the flash flood, several remain missing and hundreds were left homeless. The huge torrent of water also demolished the lower part of Tbilisi Zoo, causing many animals to drown or escape from their enclosures.
All money generated from ticket sales to the charity concert has been donated to the Tbilisi flood relief fund.
Georgia’s Ambassador Khatuna Salukvadze and Siauliai city Mayor ArtÅ«ras Visockas were among the guests who attended the concert. Visockas publically expressed his support for Georgia and wished the country a fast recovery. He then handed over a private donation to the flood-affected population of Tbilisi.
Meanwhile a joint Lithuania-Georgia charity event will be held later this year with funds raised also going to the victims. Artists from all over the world are due to take part in the Anima Mundi International Art Festival, which will be held in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi and in the Lithuanian city of Siauliai in August-September this year.
In several days’ time famous Georgian UK-based singer Katie Melua will perform a charity concert in the UK to help raise funds for people affected by the flood in her hometown Tbilisi.
Georgian Society in the UK announced Melua will perform a charity concert on June 21 in London.
