Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is calling upon the international community to stabilize the situation in Ukraine and protect the country’s sovereignty and independence.

In a statement today, the Ministry said the localised destabilization might expand to the whole region if not handled quickly.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses deep concern over the developments in Crimea, Ukraine. As it is known, the Russian Government announced the decision to input additional military force in Crimea in order to protect Russian citizens and "stabilize" the situation, which practically means starting military aggression against sovereign, independent Ukraine and is carried out by Russia, whom together with the USA and Great Britain, is the guarantor of Ukraine’s independence and border inviolability according to the December 5, 1994 Budapest Memorandum,” reads the statement.

"We call upon the international community to take immediate measures to execute [action to prevent] escalation of the situation and make all possible efforts to prevent the attempt of infringing Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Otherwise the situation will take a deplorable turn and as a result of this intervention, Europe will witness a new occupation that we also have experienced on ourselves.”

The Ministry's statement said Russia's earlier aggression in Georgia ended with "fatal results for the country, by occupation of Georgia’s territories" and the international community remained powerless, until this day, to force Russia to fulfill its commitments and withdraw troops from Georgia.

The Ministry believed the Russian Government’s decision to deploy military in Crimea significantly endangered security within the region.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the international community to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty. Otherwise we might see a destabilization not only in Ukraine, but in the whole region, which will be the worst outcome for everyone.”
