The Georgian luger who died in a tragic accident at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics has been honoured at the Sochi Olympic competition.

Representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Luge Federation took a moment of silence in mourning for 21-year-old Nodar Kumaritasvili, who lost control at high speed during his final training run in Vancouver and crashed into a steel pole.

The International Olympic Committee spokesperson said the luge centre in Vancouver would also be decorated with flowers in his remembrance.

"We will commemorate this day in the future as well as an event that will never be forgotten by those who were there when it happened,” the spokesperson said, adding the IOC would continue cooperating with Kumaritahsvili’s family to respect the athlete properly.

The honouring ceremony took place at the Sanki Sliding Centre near Sochi.
