Snowboard accident: Georgia’s bid for 2018 Winter Olympics dies in avalanche

Georgia is saddened after the death of a 28-year-old Georgian snowboarder who was to participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Nugzar Diakonashvili, award-winning snowboarder died after he was hit by a small-sized avalanche in one of Georgia’s winter resorts Bakuriani yesterday.

Diakonashvili was snowboarding at an unpaved, fresh snow-covered area far from the main skiing trails when the avalanche felled down from the nearby mountain.

Rescuers found the dead body of the sportsman hours later between the Mount Kokhta and Didveli trails of Bakuriani.

Diakonashvili became Champion of Georgia in boardercross in 2015. He also was head of Bakuriani Group of Georgia’s Snowboard Federation.

The late sportsman was preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics, scheduled to be held in South Korea.
