Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the Zagulba Presidential Palace in Baku today on her first regional trip as president.
This is my first official visit as the president in the region and I am meeting with the president of a country with which we are linked by centuries-old cooperation and partnership,” Zurabishvili said.

Zurabishvili stated that the two countries started a new, independent life together after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
We together regained independence and have suffered similar tragedies over the past several years. We are still suffering the occupation of our territories. The occupation lines still remain as open wounds to us which on the one hand prevent our development but on the other hand, we managed to strengthen our states and their economies,” Zurabishvili said.

Zurabishvili stated that Georgia and Azerbaijan have created a regional “safe energy corridor.”
We are together carrying ou projects which are of high importance for the region and the world,” Zurabishvili said.
Aliyev stated that his country “gives high importance” to Zurabishvili’s visit.

He said that Georgia and Azerbaijan show solidarity in terms of each other’s territorial problems in all international organizations.
“It is important that we encourage stronger cooperation based on our centuries-old friendship,” Aliyev said.
