President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili held a phone conversation with her Estonian counterpart President Kersti Kaljulaid yesterday.

Zurabishvili, who was the initiator of the call, thanked Kaljulaid for raising the issue of Georgia at her recent meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, her press office said.

President Zurabishvili said, Estonia is Georgia’s significant supporter, which is using all the international formats to express its “unwavering support” to Georgia.

During the meeting the Russian and Estonian presidents talked “in more detail about conflicts and their possible solutions in Ukraine and Georgia, where the position of Estonia and the European Union is very clear”.

Kaljulaid also said that as Estonia is a candidate for the UN Security Council, “conflicts in the world affect us all in one way or another”.

  • Russia has occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
  • Today only Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria have recognised the regions as independent states since the Russia-Georgia war in 2008, with the influence of Russia.
  • The rest of the international community says that the regions are indeed occupied by Russia.
