Gov’t creates new model for vocational education

The Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced at today’s governmental meeting that the government is taking steps to create a new model for vocation education which will be based on German, Austrian and Swiss experience in the field.
Kvirikashvili stated that the following changes will be carried out:
- The integration of the middle level general education into vocational education, which will give a chance to students of vocational institutions to receive an academic certificate and advance from vocational education to a level of higher education.
- The amendments also allow for validating vocational education credits at higher education institutions.
- The form of dual education based on apprenticeship will be defined and prioritised.
- The amendments also offer opportunities for implementing exchange programs.
- A system of vocational training and retraining will be established, and diverse educational programs will be carried out for both youth and adults.
- Systemic approaches for inclusive education will be introduced.
- State-run schools of vocational education will be authorised to implement economic activities, including sell products/services developed in the process of learning.
- A system for teachers’ training and career advancement will be established.
- Opportunities for the recognition of informal and formal education will be created.
- The draft law is in full accordance with European standards, including the obligations under the Georgia-EU Association Agreement.
The Prime Minister of Georgia has today revealed a plan of the Vocational Education reform, stressing the plan would provide an "absolutely different learning model” in the country.
The Georgian education system is preparing a series of changes to allow for more flexibility in schools and to promote student-guided learning.
Robert Bosch Ltd will train Georgian students as a way to support the development of vocational education in engineering.
Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikahsvili stated today that Georgia was in need of systemic changes in the education system and named the three directions which should be urgently addressed in the field.
In terms of general education changes include supporting teachers and their professional development, better quality books for students and development of their creative thinking, as well as introducing modern technologies in schools.
The projects and activities carried out by the Millenium Challenge Account in Georgia were discussed at a supervisory board meeting headed by PM Kvirikashvili yesterday.
The first Eastern Partnership European School opened its doors to 30 students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine today. The start of the academic year was marked with an official inauguration ceremony by EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn and Prime Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze.
Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze and Education Minister Mikheil Batiashvili have presented a strategy for Georgian education reform today in Ikalto, in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia, where one of the first Georgian academies was built in the 11th century. PM Bakhtadze stated that new learning models will be initially implemented in 50 public schools and the number of such schools will increase to 2,000 by the year 2023.
Georgian Technical University has opened a technical training centre today to improve vocational education through offering modern and labour-market oriented professional programmes for students.
The Government of Switzerland has allocated $6 million dollars to Georgia, which will be invested in agriculture and vocational training programmes.
A new student campus will be built in Tbilisi in the framework of new education reforms. The campus will be built on 129,778 square meters of land in Didi Digomi on David Agmashenebeli Alley.
The Georgian Education Ministry has announced plans regarding reforms in the vocational education field. Youth with a diploma attesting to a basic education [completing only nine grades at schools instead of 12] will be able to study school subjects in parallel with receiving a vocational education.
The Georgian government has taken on responsibility to provide “unprecedented support” for education in the country and invest one-fourth of the state budget for educational goals, Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze stated earlier today during the presentation of the government initiative: Education - Way to Freedom.
The first preparatory course for university applicants living in the Russia-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) has begun. The programme is being administered by the Education Ministry and Ministry of Reconciliation as part of the peace initiative ‘Step to Better Future.’
A Swiss agricultural school will open in the village of Sarkineti, Dmanisi municipality in 2020.
The EU and the government of Georgia have launched the second phase of the Skills4Jobs programme in Georgia that will assist 105,000 Georgians find jobs by expanding high quality vocational education, improving labour policies, and supporting entrepreneurship training, the EU in Georgia reports.
