Jan-May 2018: Georgian wine export up 27 percent

Georgia exported 31.5 million bottles of wine to 46 countries in the first five months of 2018, announces the Georgian National Wine Agency.

In January-May of 2018 Georgia generated about $75.3 million from the sale of wine abroad.

Revenue increased by 36 percent from January-May 2017, while the volume of exports increased by 27 percent, said the Georgian National Wine Agency.

Export growth was notable in the following countries:

  • Japan – 186 percent increase (97,668 bottles)
  • Great Britain – 109 percent increase (45,210 bottles)
  • The Czech Republic– 87 percent (24,408 bottles)
  • South Korea – 76 percent increase (31,380 bottles)
  • Germany –51 percent increase (252,982 bottles)

The top five countries that imported the most bottles of Georgia wine in January-March 2018 were:

  1. Russia – 20,439,494 bottles
  2. Ukraine – 3,149,059 bottles
  3. China – 2,331,800 bottles
  4. Kazakhstan – 1,379,698 bottles
  5. Poland – 1,300,222 bottles

The most popular Georgian wines exported in January-May of 2018 were:

  • Kindzmarauli – 5.7 million bottles
  • Mukuzani – 1.7 million bottles
  • Tsinandali – 1.4 million bottles
  • Akhasheni – 638,000 bottles
  • Khvanchkara – 282,000 bottles

In the reporting period 172 companies exported their wines abroad, said the Georgian National Wine Agency.

Meanwhile, Georgia exported 6.7 million bottles of Georgian brandy and 134,000 bottles of Chacha abroad in January-May 2018.
