For the third time in a row Georgian judoka has won the top award at a prestigious international judo competition in Germany.
Varlam Liparteliani (-90kg) received a gold medal in his respective category at the Judo Grand Prix Dusseldorf 2015, the major judo event that took place on 20-22 February.
As well as this success, the Georgian team won two silver and two bronze medals.
Liparteliani fought an American, Kazakh, Swedish and another Georgian athlete before he defeated Kazbeg Zankishiev of Russia in the final.
The silver medal winners were Avtandil Tchrikishvili (-81kg) and Nugzar Tatalashvili (-73kg). The bronze medals went to Beka Gviniashvili (-90kg) and Vazha Margvelashvili (-66).
With a total of five medals, the Georgian team ranked second among the 68 nations who participated in the competition.
The next judo Grand Prix was scheduled to be held in Tbilisi on 20-22 March.
Meanwhile, last week the Georgian judo team won six medals at the European Open in Rome, Italy.
In 2014 the Georgian national Judo team cemented their status as the best in the continent after winning the Judo European Championship for the third time in a row.
