The people of Georgia have donated more than two million GEL in less than 48 hours for the victims of Saturday night’s disaster.

"Accounts have been opened at five different banks to help the victims of the natural disaster. According to our information, the population has transferred more than two million GEL to these bank accounts. This is an unprecedented high public turnout,” said Georgia’s Finance Minister Nodar Khaduri.

"In addition, a special Treasury account has been opened. The proceeds of which will be directly transferred to the Tbilisi budget, while donations made in US dollar will be transferred to the state budget and after its conversion, to the city budget,” he added.

Khaduri said it was extremely pleasing to see Georgian people helping out members of their own community who were in need.

Meanwhile people all over the world are donating to a fund that will help Georgia’s capital city recover from the devastating flood that slammed Tbilisi overnight on June 13.

As of midday today, more than $28,000 USD (about 62,000 GEL) had been raised in about 48 hours through donations from about 580 people via Indiegogo, an international crowdfunding website. People can donate to the Indiegogo campaign for 30 days before it closes in mid-July.

People can also purchase bags or t-shirts from Tbilisi Hippo Fund, and funds will go to those affected by the flash flood.

These were two of several funds established in the past 24 hours to raise money for victims of the June 13 disaster.

As well as the public, the international official community has offered assistance to Georgia. The European Union (EU) expressed its full solidarity to the country and said it was ready to deploy assistance to help Georgia recover from the disaster.

Minister Khaduri initially said a preliminary estimate put the damage at 40 million GEL but yesterday he reassessed the situation and said the damage "now seemed way more than this”.

The Georgian Government allocated 10 million GEL to Tbilisi City Hall to combat the damage caused by major flooding in the country’s capital overnight. Additionally, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili promised every family who had lost a loved one would receive 10,000 GEL (about 4,500 USD) financial aid from the state.
