The United Airports of Georgia on Thursday said the Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air would launch a new direct service connecting Georgia’s  western Kutaisi International Airport with Lyon Saint-Exupery Airport in France starting on June 3.

The new service will operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the body added.

Irakli Karkashadze, the CEO of the airports body, said the new route provided an opportunity to enhance travel options for Georgian citizens and strengthen ties between the two countries.

Lyon will be the second French city directly linked to Georgia, following the existing connections to Paris. The new route will offer a comfortable travel option between Kutaisi and one of France's most significant cultural and economic centres”, he said.

This is also great news for Georgian fans, as they will now be able to easily attend matches featuring the Georgian national football team’s striker, Giorgi Mikautadze, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais. Fans will have the opportunity to see him compete in the prestigious Champions League”, Karkashadze added.

The body also said the airline continued to expand its offerings from Kutaisi, already including flights to 23 destinations across 15 countries in Europe and the Middle East.

Wizz Air will also resume flights to Madrid and Hamburg in April.
