Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili and her Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan on Thursday highlighted the importance of strategic partnership between the two countries in a meeting during the former’s first official visit to Armenia.

The parties noted a declaration on strategic partnership, signed last year, had “further strengthened the exceptional ties and cooperation” between the two countries, elevating their relations to a “new level”,  while also reaffirming “deep-rooted friendship” between them, the Georgian foreign office said.

The meeting also emphasised their economic and trade partnership, and “strong” tourism ties, with Armenia ranking third among the top sources of visitors to Georgia.

The officials also pointed out the Georgia-Armenia Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, set to host its latest meeting later today, was a “vital platform for fostering multidimensional cooperation and maintaining a regular dialogue”.

The discussions also covered developments in the South Caucasus region, existing challenges, and emerging opportunities, with both sides stressing the importance of “joint efforts in ensuring peace and stability in the region”.

In her comments at a joint briefing, Botchorishvili noted there was “even more potential” for Georgia-Armenia cooperation in a number of areas, adding both countries needed to “strengthen joint efforts to better represent our region,[and] our region’s interests”.

In general, we must also say the existing cooperation between the two countries is fundamentally very strong and in many directions. We are eager to further strengthen those relations”, she said.

On his part, Mirzoyan highlighted the “great importance” of the partnership developed within the Intergovernmental Commission, and noted the frequency of  its meetings indicated that “our topics are aimed at deepening the partnership”.
