Guido Invernizzi, an Italian sommelier, emphasised the international recognition of Georgian wine and highlighted its high quality at the Merano Wine Festival in Italy, the National Wine Agency of Georgia said on Thursday.

It is very exciting to taste a wine that has a history of 8,000 years. Georgian wine is becoming more and more famous in the world, which indicates its high quality. Both traditional and modern winemaking methods can be found in Georgia”, Invernizzi said during a tasting event at the Festival that featured 20 Georgian wine-producing companies.

When I last visited, I had the opportunity to taste the Racha-Lechkhumi Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli wines. I can still recall their distinctive flavours, and I hope to find wines of this variety here as well”, he added.

During the tasting, wines from various Georgian regions were on display, including the award-winning Kvevari wine and Saperavi varieties.

The festival, now in its 33rd year, attracts wine professionals, journalists, and enthusiasts from across Europe, with last year’s event seeing an installation of a qvevri clay vessel, used in traditional Georgian method of underground wine storage and recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, in the historical centre of the Merano municipality.
