The meetings of representatives of the European and Central Asian countries of the Universal Postal Union started on Tuesday in Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi to discuss international trends in the postal sector, the Economy Ministry said.

Eka Kubusidze, the Head of the Communications, Information and Modern Technologies Department of the Economy Ministry of Georgia, and Levan Chikvaidze, the Director General of the Georgian Post, are participating in the UPU working meetings along with the representatives of the ministries responsible for the development of the national postal policy and the postal regulators from the region to share innovations, their knowledge and experience, including existing global challenges.

Kubusidze emphasised the “important role” of the postal sector in connecting people despite the global progress of innovative digital technologies.

The increasing demand for electronic systems, especially for e-commerce messages, has highlighted the significant role of the postal sector at all stages of the development of our states and societies”, she said.

The three-day event, held within the framework of the UPU Regional Development Plan 2022-2025 for the countries in the Europe and Central Asia region, is attended by around 30 representatives of the postal sectors of the region.

Georgia has been a member of the UPU since 1993 and supports the goals of facilitating innovative, compatible and sustainable postal services.
