The TV Tower of Georgia’s capital Tbilisi was illuminated in pink on Tuesday in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the initiative coming from the National Screening Centre with the support of the cleaning and waste management company Tbilservice Group.
Eter Kiguradze, Director of the Centre, noted the importance of the city’s effort to join the global campaign.
“As a sign of cancer prevention and solidarity with this problem, the Tower of Tbilisi lights up in the relevant colours. Also, various events are held to raise awareness about cancer screening. This is another way to remind citizens how important timely treatment is to prevent advanced forms of the disease and fatal cases”, Kiguradze said.
The NSC Director also added a public awareness campaign was being run with the involvement of the Centre, Tbilisi Municipality Gender Equality Council and the non-governmental organisation Europa Donna Georgia to promote early cancer diagnosis, prevention and screening programmes.
A state programme offers women between the ages of 40 and 70 a free breast cancer screening across Georgia.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known as Pink October, has been marked internationally since 1997 to raise awareness of the disease. The events run from October 1 through the end of the month.
