Lado Chanturia, a professor of the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University and a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, was on Monday elected as a new Section President of the Court through a secret ballot, the State University announced on Tuesday.
The University highlighted Chanturia’s “invaluable contributions” to the development of Georgian law, and noted his “pivotal role” in the creation of the Civil Code of Georgia and his status as “one of the founders of modern Georgian law”.
Chanturia previously served as the Minister of Justice of Georgia, the Chair of the Supreme Court, and the Ambassador of the country to Germany.
He has been a judge at the ECHR since 2018, and was elected Vice-Chair of Section V on May 18, last year. In 2023, he was also elected as a full member of the European Academy, a pan-European Academy of Humanities, Letters, Law, and Sciences.
In addition to his role at TSU, he also held positions at the University of Bremen, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, and the Christian Albrecht University of Kiel.
