Georgian judge Gocha Lordkipanidze has been elected as President of the Appeals Division of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, becoming the first from the country to be selected for the position, Georgian media said on Thursday.

Lordkipanidze has been elected to the position for the next nine years, with the new position following his tenure as a judge at the institution since 2021.

He presided over interlocutory appeals in the war crimes case against Said Abdel Kani and now presides in the trial against convicted military commander Bosco Ntaganda.

Lordkipanidze is also a member of the ICC Advisory Committee on Legal Texts and leads a working group of judges to define an advisory role for the Court.
