Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday highlighted his Government’s readiness to work with the international community for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and fulfilling the UN’s 2030 agenda in comments at the Summit of the Future as a part of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
In his address, Kobakhidze said the Summit represented a “unique opportunity to demonstrate the power of effective global cooperation and multilateralism”, and cited the UN Secretary-General António Guterres' proposal from three years ago to promote a “new global consensus on delivering a better present and safeguarding the future for generations to come”.
He said the vision had become a reality as the gathering focused on rebuilding trust and seeking “multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow”.
In today’s increasingly complex and rapidly evolving world, achieving a fairer future is more pressing than ever. We face unprecedented challenges: from the lingering effects of the pandemic to persistent conflicts and deepening socio and economic disparities, humanitarian crises, and the escalating threat of climate change”, the PM said.
As a result, the world is not on track to meet the goals we have set for ourselves. The Secretary-General’s recent report on Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals shows that only 17 percent of SDG targets are on course to be achieved”, he noted.
Kobakhidze noted the Pact of the Future - an intergovernmental negotiated, action-oriented plan - provided an “opportunity to transform the success of this Summit into meaningful, lasting transformation”, adding his Government welcomed adoption of the Pact, including its Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations, and “looked forward to its swift implementation”.
