The Interagency Commission for Free and Fair Elections under Georgia's Ministry of Justice on Wednesday urged all election participants to refrain from using hate speech in statements and campaigning ahead of the October 26 general elections, saying its use “undermined” the formation of a “free and fair election environment”.

The Commission stressed parties “should avoid inciting violence to prevent incidents during the election process”.

It also highlighted the need to address violations of election laws by public servants during the upcoming vote and called on election participants to “avoid provocative actions and hate speech”, which it said could lead to verbal or physical confrontations.

The Commission further called for respect for public servants and said “insults or pressure” on them were “harmful” for the election environment and “public unity” while also violating internationally recognised human rights.
