Airline companies of Georgia have posted growth in the latest numbers of passenger and freight transportation in the second quarter of the year, statistics published on Monday by the National Statistics Office show.

In the reporting period, airlines transported 170,100 passengers with a turnover of 491.3 million passenger-kilometres, indicating a 2.6-fold increase in passenger numbers and a 3.3-fold increase in passenger turnover year-on-year, the Office said.

Freight transportation also experienced a surge, with the companies moving 46,900 tonnes with a turnover of 112.1 million ton-kilometres. Geostat said the freight volume increased 4.6 times and the freight turnover - 6.7 times y/y.

Airports of the country saw a 25.3 percent increase in the number of passengers, totalling 1.79 million individuals. Of this total, 911,400 passengers were arrivals, in a 24.5 percent increase, while 882,700 passengers departed, showing a 26.1 percent increase y/y.

Geostat also said scheduled flights carried 93.8 percent of passengers in airports of the country, while the number of passenger flights from Georgian airports rose by 26.3 percent, amounting to 7,700 flights.

The volume of freight and mail through airports reached 6,600 tonnes, with 82 percent comprising arrivals and 18 percent departures.

In line with the overall growth in transportation activity, airports of the country witnessed a 2.4-fold increase in the number of freight flights, totalling 500 and “reflecting the industry's growing importance and potential for further development”, Geostat said.

In the second quarter of 2024, 500 freight flights were carried out through domestic airports, with the number standing at 2.4 times over the corresponding indicator of the previous year.
