Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Thursday said the platform of the European Political Community was a “useful mechanism” for the country to continue its “successful European integration”, in comments over the ongoing gathering in the United Kingdom

“I would like to point out that today a very important event is taking place in the United Kingdom. We remember that this platform was created at the initiative of [the French] President Macron and serves the main purpose to enable countries that aspire to join the European Union and are members of the European family to get closer to the European Union”, Darchiashvili said.

The Minister noted issues to be discussed at the Summit included the current events in Ukraine and security challenges, as well as energy issues and the importance of diversifying energy resources, with the important role of Georgia being “emphasised”.

Georgia is a very important participant - on the one hand, in terms of geographical location, and on the other, in terms of its role for effective connection of the East and the West. The conversation focused on various energy projects, as well as the electricity cable, which is an extraordinary opportunity for energy diversification for Europe from the point of view of energy security”, he noted.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday said the country could play a “special role for Europe” in terms of connectivity.

Kobakhidze added the Georgian delegation would share messages with European counterparts on how his Government saw the country’s role for the purpose.
