Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Thursday held a farewell meeting with Mark Clayton, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Georgia, with the latter’s diplomatic term in the country coming to a close.
The meeting highlighted the strategic partnership between the two countries, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said, adding the diplomats had also underscored the significance of the Wardrop Strategic Dialogue in enhancing intensive political dialogue and sectoral cooperation.
The Ambassador expressed his gratitude to the Minister for the “productive collaboration” and emphasised the “close relations” between the United Kingdom and Georgia. Clayton also reaffirmed his country’s “strong support” for Georgia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and European aspirations, the body noted.
The sides also highlighted Georgia's progress towards European integration, pointing out “the significant steps and successful implementation of complex reforms”, the Ministry added.
Darchiashvili thanked the British diplomat for his service, wishing him success in his future endeavours.
The Government of the United Kingdom on Monday appointed Gareth Edward Ward as the new Ambassador to Georgia, who, according to the UK Government’s official webpage, will assume the position in August.
